As a fashion stylist, I work with private clients and the first thing we do to revamp one’s wardrobe is to clean out their closet! Most folks have no idea that, in reality, they have a wardrobe with only 1/3 being truly wearable items. I can’t tell you how many times people are shocked at the pile they let go of and can’t believe what they’ve been holding onto… I always get emails and texts after a session profoundly thanking me for changing their lives and opening their eyes. So, since the new year is still pretty fresh and spring is just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to tackle this project. If it’s not in your budget to hire a professional, follow these simple rules:

1. If you haven’t worn it for more than a year, let it go (unless it’s super cute and good for a wedding or special event… then it’s worth keeping).

2. Keep in mind the difference between “vintage” and “dated.” Vintage = cool, rad piece of clothing your friends will envy. Dated = not cute and out of style. If you’re questioning a particular item, keep a pile aside and ask a stylish friend her opinion.

3. Look for stains (including arm pits) and tattered material (especially sweaters). If you find either, let the piece go!

4. You might have been one size in 2005, but are another size now… that’s OK! Wear clothes that fit and you will look good; wear clothes that don’t and you will look silly. Anything too big or too small needs to go bye bye.

5. Go through your bags and shoes. Look for worn-out heels, outdated styles and anything that has had its day.

6. Here’s your last and final rule: let go of anything someone you love gave you that you don’t like, never wear and has been sitting in your closet for a while. They’ll most likely never know and the hope is, in the end, you’re left with only wearable items that fit and look good!

I promise… once you let go of the old, you will feel refreshed and you’ll have room for some fabulous updated pieces! If you can’t afford to shop with a pro, pick up the latest InStyle or Lucky Magazine for some great tips on what to buy, how to wear it and where to get it. – Heather

I am the queen of cleaning out! I’ll admit, though, there are some jeans I really wish I would’ve hung on to! Good post!

You are so right about all of this! Ugh, I need to go inspect my closet now. I know I’m at least a double offender here.

I just did this last weekend- I wasn’t brave enough to actually donate/sell anything yet so I moved it into bags in my garage. I’m hoping “out of sight, out of mind” and if I haven’t missed anything in a month or so, I’ll toss it all!
