By now you’re aware of the wildly popular TOMBOYStyle blog (and if you aren’t, what a pleasure to introduce you!) and the subsequent spin-off book, Tomboy Style: beyond the boundaries of fashion, being published by Rizzoli available April 3 (pre-order now!). But how well do you know the girl behind the blog? We caught up with TOMBOYstyle creator and author, Lizzie Garrett Mettler and were lucky enough to have her share a few things with TPS via the world famous TOMBOYstyle Q&A format. So without further adieu…

If not in Los Angeles, I would live in…New York.

My dream holiday would be to…go antiquing in Belgium.

My current obsessions are…

Food: The shrimp toast sandwich at Son of a Gun
Music: KISSES
Fashion: Hudson, Chance, RTH, Feal Mor, A.P.C.
Retail Store(s): The new store Garde on Beverly Blvd.

I channel my childhood self when I…wear neon.

The fictional character I most relate to is…A combination of Gene and Phineas from A Separate Peace. I always find myself toggling between the rule-follower and the rule-breaker, never quite knowing which one is really me.

If I had to be outdoors all day I would…hike deep into Griffith Park with my dog Harrison, and build a fort.

My favorite quality in a man is…a sense of his true style, not just in clothing, but in his manner. A man comfortable with himself, I guess. And modesty. I loathe a braggart, especially in a guy.

My favorite quality in a woman is…a zany sense of humor and follow-through.

I’m terrified of…octopuses.

My dream car is a…60s Porsche 356 Speedster. Big time.

My cocktail of choice is…Bulleit Rye Whiskey with a splash of lemonade and soda water on ice with a lime wedge.

My celebrity crush is…Dustin Hoffman.

My beauty products of choice are…Unite 7 Second Leave-In Detangler, Kiehl’s Argan Oil, daily exercise, and a good night’s sleep.

If I could go back in time for one decade it would be…The 1960s. I’d attend JFK’s moon mission speech at Rice University, see Buffalo Springfield and The Troggs live and buy one of the first YSL Le Smoking jackets.

As a teenager I was totally into…a whole lot of things I don’t want to mention here.

I tend to splurge on…out-of-print coffee table books, international fashion magazines and sunglasses.

Writing the book on Tomboy Style…is what makes me have Tomboy Style.

And if sharing her fabulous style, dreams and inspiration weren’t enough, Lizzie was gracious enough to offer one lucky TPS reader an advanced, signed copy of Tomboy Style: beyond the boundaries of fashion! I am the prep but I have an unending love and respect for all seven tomboy archetypes.

ps… not sure why my FULL NAME (so much for internet anonymity) is showing up instead of my google handle but if I am the lucky winner you can find me at onabicyclebuiltfortwo.com

Would love to have this gorgeous book in my home.

  • girloliver

love this, and of course am a HUGE fan – I would be the girl next door with a little jock mixed in (especially since she is surfing in the pic!)
    Thanks guys, great giveaway!!!

I admire all of the archetypes, but I think I am a hybrid of the Rebel & the Girl Next Door! xo

  • Alex Korchynski

Sophisticate in the fall/winter, Girl Next Door in the spring/summer, tomboy always.

I am very much the JOCK! Played on sports team some Co-ed sports team most of my childhood.

I think I have each of these archetypes in me at different times, but for day-to-day I am a mix of the Rebel, the Prep and the Girl Next Door. Thanks for the giveaway!

Thanks for the giveaway, and great interview! I’m a mix of the Girl Next Door and the Prep.

  • Missebonibooth

As much as I admire them all, I think I’m an equal mix of the prep and the girl next door!

  • http://inspirationcooperative.blogspot.com/ Theresa

Love Tomboy Style and would love to win the book.
I would say I’m a mix between The Prep and The Girl Next Door, with a pinch of The Sophisticate every once in awhile. (Would love to embrace The Rebel more.)
Thanks for this great giveaway and congratulations to Lizzie on the publication of the book!

  • RMF325

I think I’m a mix of all of them. Preppy super jock, but was also a debutante and love the sophisticated life. How dull to be only one type!

Thanks for the chance to win the book; looking forward to owning it (one way or another!).

  • Kate

I think I’m in between The Rebel and the Adventuress, with perhaps an occasional Sophisticate :)

  • Monica

A healthy mix of The Sophisticate, The Prep, and The Rebel!

  • jesakalong

The Rebel crossed with The Sophisticate…who can pass for The Naturalist, depending on the day and location. If you’re going to force me to choose one: The Rebel. My Harley-riding dad wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • Maria Lobikin

I’m an adventuress, mixed with elements of both rebel and prep.

  • Jenny

I love Tomboy Style! And I also love how you categorized them into archetypes because I’ve never been able to pinpoint what kind I am. I just knew my style was always a bit tom boy. :)

As for the question at hand: I’m a mix of three! Prep in the fall, Sophisticate in the winter, Girl Next Door in the summer and spring! I would love to be more of the Rebel and the Adventuress some day, however. Sigh.

  • No

    def a rebel

  • Courtney

I’ve always struggled to define my style but I recently discovered that it’s essentially Tomboy. Thank you Tomboy Style! :) I’d say I’m a blend of the Sophisticate and Girl Next Door with a dash of Rebel.

  • Greta

I’m a healthy mix of the Naturalist, the Rebel and the Adventuress (Osa!!!!)

  • Allison

Tough call…I suppose I’m more “girl next door” on an everyday occasion, but when I have time in the morning, I tend more “sophisticate.” I’d love to embrace more of my sophisticate side!

  • http://etreicimaintenant.tumblr.com/ Jackie

I’m a bit more on the Naturalist side of Tomboy Style — with some Sophisticate mixed in for work! Can’t wait for the book – Cheers!

  • mamavalveeta03

I’m the “Girl next door” and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What fun! I think I’m a mix of the Naturalist + the Girl Next Door. Congratulations to Lizzie – I’m so excited for April 3rd!

  • millsks

LOVE LOVE LOVE. I think I toggle between the Sophisticate and the Adventuress – on one hand my go-to outfit 70% of the time includes a blazer, yet on the other I really love nothing more than camping/going barefoot/swimming in lakes/adventuring.

  • suzanna scott

Hmmm, i’m a mix between the girl next door and the prep

  • Clbelenski

So excited for this book! I think I’m the Naturalist, with a little Rebel when I dress up!

  • http://profiles.google.com/meganlstafford Megan Stafford

I like to think I’m the rebel or the adventuress, but I’m pretty sure I’m actually the girl next door.

  • beverageseses

    I’m the girl next door!

  • Jill

I’d say I most fit the Girl Next Door. I would live in striped T shirts and jeans if I could.

  • Marcelamensajes

Totally Prep. I’m a teacher and have tons of beige pants with light blue shirts and dark brown loafers!

  • SVictoria

I would say I’m a little of each but mostly “The girl next door” :)

  • sara g

    definitely THE REBEL

  • Sophia Larrazolo

I’m a combination of the prep and the naturalist; nothing’s better than a natural face and donning a bikini on the beach. However, just like Lizzie, I’d like to be all of them!

  • http://anniezeltman.blogspot.com/ Annie Zeltman

Definitely the Naturalist, no make up boyish style with subtle feminine hints.
